A woman in India succumbed to her injuries after her husband threw acid at her. The violent attack took place while the victim was returning home after lodging a domestic violence complaint against her spouse, according to police.

The 47-year-old woman, identified as Revathi, from the city of Salem in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, met her demise Monday evening after suffering 70% burns in the brutal attack. The police arrested her husband, a 53-year-old man identified as Yesudas, Tuesday on charges of murder, reported news outlet The Hindu.

The couple was married for 20 years and had three children. They reportedly had frequent disputes between them and were living separately for the past three months. Yesudas often harassed his wife on suspicions of infidelity, the police complaint indicated as per The Times of India.

Yesudas persuaded Revathi, who was then staying with her parents, to come back to his house Saturday. However, when she came home Sunday night, he reportedly thrashed her again. Once again, he thought she was having an affair.

Revathi went to a police station with her mother Monday and lodged a domestic violence complaint against her husband. She also told the officers she wanted a divorce from Yesudas. The officers then advised her to approach a family court for her concern.

While Revathi was waiting to board a bus that would take her home, Yesudas came with a can of acid and threw it at her, police said. He ran away after the alleged attack.

Revathi suffered severe burn injuries and was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to death later that day. Her mother, who was still with her at the time of the attack, also suffered minor injuries.

Earlier this month, another woman was attacked with acid in India in an alleged attempt to make her drop a rape case. An unknown suspect reportedly threw an acid balloon at the 38-year-old victim after threatening her to withdraw the rape and extortion complaint she had lodged against a woman and her friends two months ago. The victim suffered grievous injuries to her legs and was hospitalized for treatment.
