Man Goes On Carjacking Rampage, Crashes Into Multiple Vehicles In Salt Lake City
A 20-year-old man allegedly went on a carjacking rampage and crashed into multiple vehicles in Utah's Salt Lake City after he was denied a flight ticket.
Authorities said John Joseph Thomas Green got angry after an employee at a ticket counter in the Salt Lake City International Airport told him he could not buy a same-day plane ticket to Denver, Colorado, on Friday, NY Post reported.
Green was allegedly under the influence of drugs when he carjacked at least two cars and slammed into several vehicles, Salt Lake City Police and Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release Friday.
When cops responded to the scene at around 5 a.m., they learned Green left the airport area in a stolen SUV.
"As our officers were heading to the scene, they learned that the passenger had actually left the area and had carjacked someone at the airport," police spokesman Brent Weisberg told KSL.
Green left the scene in the stolen vehicle and crashed into a car near the intersection of 900 West and 2100 South, Weisberg said, adding that he accused then made a U-turn and crashed into another vehicle, as per the outlet.
He attempted to steal another car, however, the female driver of the SUV pushed him away. She was reportedly able to prevent the carjacking after her seatbelt stopped Green from pulling her out of the car.
Green then took the same car he stole from the airport and got onto the freeway toward South Salt Lake. He reportedly hit another vehicle and nearly rammed into a building at 2860 S. West Temple, authorities added.
Police said Green carjacked another vehicle, a Dodge Durango, and crashed it into five vehicles on Interstate 80. Cops finally managed to capture Green when he was seen throwing rocks at vehicles along I-80 and attempting another carjack.
"Deputies saw Green actively trying to carjack a fourth car – a Toyota Tacoma – along I-80. The vehicle owner had removed the keys from the ignition, which prevented Green from taking the Tacoma. Summit County deputies pulled Green from the pickup and safely took him into custody at approximately 6:15 a.m," the statement added.
Two people were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said, according to KSL.
Salt Lake police said they were "working to determine whether (the man) used a firearm during this carjacking."
Green was taken to a hospital for observation and an investigation into the incident was underway with impairment as a factor. He was booked into Summit County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery, DUI, aggravated assault, a threat of violence, driving a stolen vehicle, reckless driving and other felonies.
