A Michigan man was hospitalized after being shot by his brother in a hunting accident on the first day of the state’s hunting season.

Police on Friday responded to the incident near Boston Township, Michigan. The shooting involved two brothers — one brother is 28 years old, while the other is 29 years old — who were found out in a field during the state’s first day of deer hunting season.

According to the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, the brothers reportedly got separated in a dense cornfield while searching for a deer one of the brothers had shot with a muzzle-loading rifle. The 29-year-old told investigators he thought he had seen and heard the deer from across the field and fired another shot to put it down.

However, he immediately learned the shots had struck his younger brother and immediately called 911.

While the sheriff’s office didn’t reveal where the 28-year-old was struck, the wounds were severe enough to request Aero Med and have him airlifted to Spectrum Butterworth Hospital. He received treatment and is said to be in critical but stable condition. Both brothers have been cooperative with police, who are still investigating the shooting.

The shooting was also one of many accidents to occur in Michigan as part of the hunting season’s start. A man reportedly died in West Michigan after his canoe tipped over while out hunting. Two boys in Grayling, Michigan, were also injured after their father’s gun discharged.
