Man Jailed For 13 Years After 3-Month-Old Daughter Died Of 'Catastrophic' Brain Injuries, Rib Fractures
A 33-year-old man has been jailed for murdering his three-month-old daughter who died last year after suffering catastrophic brain and skull injuries.
Anthony Miley of Cheshire in England was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years in jail after the court found him guilty of manslaughter charges in his daughter's death on July 23, 2020. The infant's mother, 33-year-old Stephanie Shore, was acquitted of murder charges, BBC News reported.
A medical examination revealed that the infant suffered serious injuries to the brain and had sustained bleeding on both sides of the brain. She was also found with 53 rib fractures, both old and new.
However, investigators said both Miley and Shore could not explain how their daughter suffered such grave injuries. They were both arrested on charges of murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.
"Evidence from the medical experts, in this case, showed that the infant had sustained a total of 53 rib fractures – all of which had occurred within four separate time frames and three closely positioned skull fractures which had been caused less than two days before her death," Kate Tomlinson, an investigating officer said, according to Northwich Guardian.
Miley told the court that on the day before his daughter’s death, he woke the infant at around 3 a.m. for a feed. He claimed the infant turned “floppy” after two or three mouthfuls of milk and he went to take help from Shore. However, Shore said she had noticed the child crying but not in a way that caused concern and went back to sleep. After around four hours, Miley woke Shore and told her that the child is in danger.
Shore then called emergency officers and the infant was rushed to a hospital. The baby girl succumbed to her injuries a day later.
"To this day, Miley continues to deny any knowledge of how the infant sustained these injuries and has shown no remorse which is totally unforgivable," Tomlinson said, according to BBC.
"This is a tragic case involving a defenseless baby who had been subject to a catalog of horrendous injuries in her short life which must have been lived predominantly in pain," she added.
