A man killed his 10-month-old granddaughter to take revenge against his son and daughter-in-law. The incident took place in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Monday.

Police said the accused, identified as 47-year-old Selvaraj, left home with his granddaughter Monday morning. When he did not return home after a long time, the girl’s father filed a police complaint. The following day, police found the accused walking alone in an abandoned area and detained him for questioning. During interrogation, Selvaraj said he murdered the girl using a stone and disposed of her body behind a bakery. Police immediately rushed to the area and recovered the baby’s body. It was then sent for autopsy.

Police further interrogated the accused during which he said his second wife recently left him and he believed his son and daughter-in-law were responsible for it. He said his son, with his first wife, and daughter-in-law purposely argued with his second wife frequently. In order to take revenge against him, Selvaraj murdered his granddaughter.

In a similar incident in Russia in January, a man and his wife were arrested after they killed their 11-month-old grandson by burning him in a stove. The boy’s mother left the child in her parent’s care and when she returned, she heard the news that her baby was no more. Speaking to local media, a neighbor said the grandfather threw the baby into the stove after getting drunk. The grandmother watched the man killing the child and did not try to stop him.

“The grandparents were drunk and killed the baby. A family member found the body of the boy badly damaged by the high temperature inside the stove,” officials said.
