Man Kills Live-In Partner, Her Mother With Machete After Fight Over Marriage
A man in India killed his 25-year-old live-in girlfriend and her mother Saturday with a machete following a domestic dispute regarding their marital status.
The incident took place in the southern state of Karnataka. According to local reports, the man was identified as Malay Fareed. The police said Fareed and the victim had a 4-month-old child together.
“Fareed and Ramadevi were in the relationship for a couple of years. The probe so far has revealed that the two were arguing about marriage. Fareed kept dodging her requests,” a senior police official told media outlet the Hindu.
It remains unclear if the mother also used to live with the two or was visiting them when the attack took place.
On the day of the incident, Ramadevi began speaking about the status of their relationship, which angered Fareed. When Ramadevi and her mother were asleep, the accused entered their room with a machete and killed them both. He then went to a nearby police station and surrendered himself.
“In his confession, Fareed said he worked as a fabricator at an under-construction apartment while Ramadevi did housework. They started seeing each other in 2018. After they had the child in September 2020, Ramadevi decided they should get married. Her mother reportedly also confided in some of her friends in the apartment, and asked that they advise him to marry her daughter,” the police officer added, the Hindu reported.
Police took Fareed into custody and sent the bodies of both the victims for autopsy. The charges against Fareed are yet to be revealed.
In November, a 25-year-old man was arrested for attacking his girlfriend and burning her alive. The incident took place in the western Indian state of Maharashtra.
The victim and the accused were traveling on a motorcycle when the latter stopped the vehicle and attacked his girlfriend. When the woman tried to fight back, the accused threw acid on her and burnt her alive. He later pushed her into a deep ditch beside the road and fled the scene.
A preliminary investigation showed the two were in a live-in relationship. However, the motive behind the killing was not revealed at the time.
