A man in India killed his mother for not cooking dinner, then sat beside her corpse for several hours.

The victim, identified as 70-year-old Sukhdei, lived with her two sons, who were both laborers. Before leaving for work Sunday morning, the accused, identified as Sanjeev, had given some money to his brother, Rajiv, to buy vegetables, News 18 reported.

When he returned home at night and asked his mother to serve food, she told him she hasn’t cooked as his brother had not purchased vegetables. In a fit of rage, Sanjeev picked up a heavy object and smashed her mother's head with it, killing the woman on the spot. The incident took place at their residence in Bareilly, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, News 2o reported.

Following the murder, the accused sat next to the woman’s corpse for several hours. He then went to his uncle’s home in the same neighborhood and informed him that he had killed his mother. The uncle rushed to the scene and saw the woman lying motionless on the floor. It wasn’t clear where the accused’s brother was when the crime took place.

When Sanjeev’s sister Urmila was informed about the incident, she filed a police complaint against his brother. The accused was taken into custody on charges of murder. He remained in police custody as of Tuesday.

As part of the investigation, other family members were interviewed and it was revealed that the accused had attacked his mother several times in the past after drinking alcohol.

The woman’s body was sent for an autopsy.

Last year, a man in the northern Indian state of Bihar killed his mother after she took a little bit more time in serving him food. The accused asked his mother to serve food instantly saying he was hungry. When the mother took longer to serve, the man started fighting with his mother before picking up a heavy object and hitting her on the head with it. The mother, who suffered serious injuries, was rushed to a local hospital where she died.
