A man killed five family members, including his pregnant wife, suspecting her of having an affair with someone. The incident took place in Ranchi, the capital city of the Indian state of Jharkhand, on Tuesday night.

Police said the accused, identified as 30-year-old Gango Das, reached home Tuesday night and fought with his eight-month pregnant wife. When his family members including his mother tried to intervene, Das picked up an axe and hacked all of them. He then locked himself in a room. Some villagers alerted the police who arrived at the scene and took the accused into custody.

According to the police, while his 60-year-old mother, wife, six-year-old daughter, two-year-old son and another family member died on the spot, his niece was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was undergoing treatment. All the bodies were sent for autopsy.

The case was being investigated and the accused was admitted to a hospital as he appeared to be mentally unstable.

The incident comes a few months after a man killed his wife and two children suspecting her of having an affair in the southern Indian state of Telangana. Praveen Kumar and his wife were having an argument during which he picked up an iron rod and killed her. He then strangled his son, 9, and daughter, 5. Kumar went to the police station and surrendered himself. The man was charged with murder.
