In a bizarre incident, a 22-year-old man in India approached government authorities seeking information about his father's whereabouts and the details he received were rather shocking. He came to know that his father, who was living separately, had married his estranged wife.
The unnamed man allegedly married the woman in 2016. Both were minors at the time, reported the Times of India. They separated six months later following a domestic dispute. The young man had tried to reconcile with his wife since their separation. But, she refused and sought a divorce.
Police said the woman fell in love with her 48-year-old father-in-law, who was a sanitation worker. They legally married when she turned 18. The couple has a 2-year-old child and is living "elsewhere."
The son filed a citizen's right to information petition, which is similar to the Freedom of Information Act, to collect information about his father after the latter stopped giving him money.
"The son filed an RTI at District Panchayati Raj Office to collect information about his father and found the latter had married his own estranged wife," said Sub-inspector Rajendra Prasad.
It was not clear when he filed the petition. After the shocking discovery, the young man filed a report against both his father and estranged wife at the Bisauli police station in Uttar Pradesh. On Saturday, the couple and the son were called by the police for a meeting. Police said both the parties were aggressive and tried to attack each other during the meeting.
"The complaint is under investigation and police are taking action as per the law," Officer Vinay Chauhan told the Times of India.
Police are treating the incident as a case of "Marital discord" and are acting as a mediator, reported Times Now.
"We didn't find any documents related to her first marriage. She was also a minor then. So, a case cannot be registered, as of now. Both the parties will receive notice for further sessions," said Prasad.
The girl told police that she was happy with her current husband and did not want to go back to her "first husband."
