A Connecticut mother of two was murdered with an axe by her former boyfriend at her Milford residence, while her children were inside.
The victim was identified as 40-year-old Julie Minogue and the suspect as 42-year-old Ewen Dewitt. The incident occurred Tuesday night, just days after Minogue obtained a restraining order against Dewitt.
The woman's 17-year-old son called 911 just after 9 p.m. and reported that a man was assaulting his mother in their home on Salem Walk in Milford. Upon reaching the address, cops found the victim in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor.
Dewitt had fled the scene by the time responding officers arrived, WTNH reported.
According to court documents, Minogue's teen son woke up from his sleep after he heard yelling downstairs. He told investigators that when he went downstairs, he saw Dewitt standing over his mother's body.
"I look at her [Minogue] first and then I look at Ewen and he looks straight at me right in my eyes," the teen told authorities, as per the documents, adding that he ran back upstairs to his room and locked himself inside.
Minogue's 3-year-old boy, meanwhile, was found on the couch in the living room and appeared to be in a state of shock. Both children were physically unharmed in the incident and were sent under the care of family members.
The victim and the suspect were previously in a relationship, cops said.
On Dec. 1, Minogue was given a full no-contact restraining order after she filed a complaint against Dewitt that he sent her harassing text messages. In a Nov. 17 statement to police accessed by NBC Connecticut, Minogue maintained she was scared Dewitt was going to kill her.
"I don't feel I should be subjected to this abuse any longer," Minogue said in the statement. "I am scared for the safety of my children."
After committing the crime, Dewitt reportedly called his mother and told her he had killed his girlfriend. Dewitt's mother further reported the crime to the police, investigators said.
The man was eventually arrested without incident from a trailer parked outside a bar in West Haven. He was charged with murder, criminal violation of a standing criminal protective order, criminal violation of a restraining order, risk of injury, and reckless endangerment.
An investigation into what led to the brutal murder was launched by the authorities.
