A man was arrested Wednesday for killing a woman and raping her corpse in the city of Shibpur Upazila in Bangladesh.

The incident came to light Saturday after the body of 21-year-old Sabina Aktar was found in a banana field, two days after she went missing. Police said an autopsy revealed “post-death intercourse.” A special team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) took up the case and located the suspect, 28-year-old Saiful Islam, by tracing his mobile phone.

In a press conference Wednesday, RAB 11 Captain Lt Col Kazi Shamsher Uddin said that during interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime and despite having two children with his second wife, Islam met the victim and promised to get married to her. He also concealed the fact that he had two children. Islam said the two then got into a relationship during which he asked Aktar for sex, but she declined.

On June 6, Islam and Aktar met and decided to get married. However, instead of going to a relative’s house, the man lured Sabina to a deserted banana field where he tried to sexually assault her. When the victim started screaming, he suffocated her to death with his shirt before raping the corpse. He then fled the scene with her phone and purse in order to destroy traces of evidence. Following his confession, officials recovered the shirt, the victim’s phone and purse.

In a similar incident in April, a man was arrested for killing a six-year-old girl and raping her corpse in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand. Police began looking for the girl after she went missing while playing near her home. Police said the accused, a security guard, lured the victim to a nearby forest and attempted to rape her. However, when she began screaming, he strangled her to death before having sex with the corpse.
