A man rushed back inside his burning house in Oklahoma City to save his beloved pet but did not make it out alive. Firefighters later pulled his body out from the house, officials said. The man's family and the dog he wanted to save managed to survive the house fire.
Officials with the Oklahoma City Fire Department arrived at the house on Emerald Drive shortly after 7 a.m. on Jan. 30. The family members inside the house had made it out by this time, but one of them had gone back inside to rescue the dog, according to KFOR-TV.
The deceased man and two other occupants were inside the house when the fire started. They were woken up by fire alarms as the smoke detectors went off, and managed to safely exit the house before firefighters arrived. It was only when they were outside that realized their dog was still inside, according to details revealed by the fire department Monday.
“The husband went back inside the burning structure to try and find their dog," fire officials said, as quoted by The Oklahoman.
Firefighters arrived at the house to find a huge blaze and smoke coming out of the house. They were told by the residents outside that one of their family members was still inside trying to retrieve the dog. The firefighters immediately rushed to the missing person’s aid and tried to extinguish the flames.
The missing resident’s body was found in the kitchen area and was pulled out of the burning home, officials said. First responders administered CPR to the man and rushed him to a hospital nearby. However, the man was found to be in critical condition and was eventually pronounced dead at the hospital, officials added.
Firefighters at the scene doused the flames and estimated the damage caused to the house to be worth $430,000. They suspect that the fire began in the office near the front-end of the house before spreading. Investigators and the police are conducting a probe into the incident.
No other family members were reported to have sustained injuries from the incident. The family dog also luckily made it out of the house and survived the incident.
