A 43-year-old man in Cincinnati, Ohio, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually exploiting a minor, prosecutors announced this week.
Scott Surgener was sentenced in U.S. District Court to 240 months in prison for creating child pornography of a minor in his care during child sleepovers, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio said in a statement Wednesday.
Additionally, he was also sentenced to 10 years of supervised release following imprisonment and was ordered to pay $3,000 in victim restitution, according to prosecutors.
Surgener engaged in sexually explicit conduct with a minor in his home from April 2018 through July 2019 for the purpose of taking pictures and videos of the child sexual abuse, court documents said. A total of 28 videos and images were produced.
The pictures and videos were taken in Surgener's residence while the victim, who was younger than 13, was in his care at child sleepovers.
Surgener was charged by a federal complaint in October 2019 and has remained in custody since. He pleaded guilty to producing child pornography in February this year.
A similar incident happened in July when a former assistant principal at a school in Alabama admitted to filming a minor girl taking a shower and using the bathroom when she came over to his home in 2013 to visit his daughter.
Tim Clevenger, 54, pleaded guilty on June 17 to two counts of production of child pornography and two counts of possession of child pornography. He was previously convicted in 2018 on the same charges, but this case involved a different victim.
The former assistant principal of a high school outside Birmingham had recorded the victims using his bathroom or showering at night from outside the window of his Cleveland, Alabama, home when the girls would come over to visit his daughter.
The videos were taken at night when the girls were unaware that Clevenger was outside watching them.
Clevenger was sentenced to 18 years on each of the production counts and seven years on each of the possession charges.
