A man in the Indian state of Rajasthan fatally shot his mistress and himself Friday, authorities said, after the woman allegedly blackmailed him.
The man, identified as Chhagan Banjara, 30, barged into the home of his lover, Mamta Banjara, 23, in Subhash Nagar, Pali, around 9 p.m. Friday with a gun as the latter was having dinner with her family, the Times of India reported, citing police.
"[Mamta] tried to run away, but [Chhagan] caught her and shot her point-blank in the head. As soon as she collapsed, Chhagan shot himself also in the head," police said.
Both were rushed to the hospital, but Mamta was declared dead on arrival. Meanwhile, Chhagan was referred to the city of Jodhpur, where he died Saturday during treatment.
A suicide note that was recovered from Chhagan's pocket claimed that Mamta had blackmailed Chhagan after the latter left his wife for her.
Chhagan was married and had two children, but he had not lived with his wife for a long time, preliminary investigation revealed.
He allegedly wanted to marry Mamta, whom he had known for five years as they were both in the catering and confectionery business.
However, Mamta and her mother were allegedly not ready as Chhagan already had children.
Chhagan suspected that Mamta had an affair with another man, and the two had arguments on several occasions, according to the report.
He allegedly warned Mamta against the affair and urged her to accept his marriage proposal.
Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident, a report by Times Now News said.
Authorities have also detained two people who allegedly dropped off Chhagan at Mamta's home Friday night. Their role in the incident is still being determined.
In a similar incident, a married Texas businessman paid hitmen trained by special forces more than $750,000 to murder his mistress and her new boyfriend after the two threatened to expose his affair.
Authorities arrested Erik Charles Maund, of Austin, in December last year over the deaths of Holly Williams, 33, and her partner William Lanway, 36.
The 46-year-old allegedly paid a team of hitmen to kidnap and murder the two victims in Nashville, Tennessee, in March 2020, according to prosecutors.
Maund and the hitmen were charged with conspiracy to commit kidnapping, kidnapping resulting in death as well as carrying, brandishing and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
