A woman was in critical condition after being stabbed by her husband during an argument over their parenting style. The incident took place in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday.

According to an affidavit, police responded to a home Tuesday evening and found a woman with multiple stab wounds on her back and torso. The unnamed victim told the officers she was in the shower when her six-year-old daughter entered and told her the suspect, Jeremy Tyress Johnson, had given her warm water.

The victim then asked her husband to leave the home for the night as he was "bickering" with the child. However, he refused and instead, entered the bathroom and started arguing with her. The victim then informed Johnson she was leaving, which enraged him and he subsequently punched her in the mouth before stabbing her 17 times with a kitchen knife.

The victim was rushed to the hospital where it was discovered that she had stab wounds on almost the entire body including the neck, behind the ear and armpit. She remained in the hospital in critical condition.

Meanwhile, the suspect was taken into custody after he admitted to stabbing his wife during an argument. He was charged with attempted criminal homicide and was held in Davidson County Jail on a $250,000 bond.

Speaking to Fox 17, Diana Tredway, a neighbor, said she was “dumbfounded” by the incident.

“He seemed perfectly, he was nice, normal, nothing, I wouldn’t have thought anything,” she added.

Following the incident, experts said women should be aware of domestic abuse warning signs.

“Things like controlling behavior, he’s watching her where she goes, maybe coming on her job, controlling the finances, that’s a huge one. A lot of people think that it’s really about the physical violence, but it’s not just physical violence, it’s also the mental cruelty,” said LaRhonda Magras, with the Nashville YWCA, a non-profit organization that helps “women, girls and families build safer, more self-sufficient lives.”
