Man Strangles Woman To Death, Has Sex With Corpse In Field

A man was arrested in India for allegedly strangling a woman to death and then having sex with the corpse.

The accused was identified as 29-year-old Shankarappa. The attack took place on Oct. 19 in the south-eastern state of Andhra Pradesh, but came to light recently, news outlet the Times of India reported Monday.

Senior police officer GK Mithun Kumar told local media Shankarappa had come to a village near the city of Visakhapatnam three months ago and was working as a laborer in different fields. A day before the attack, he had been out drinking, following which he had slept under a tree.

The next day he realized he had lost his mobile phone and some money. While searching for his phone, he spotted two women and a girl working in the fields.

Shankarappa approached them and began talking. One of the women and the girl left the scene as there were signs of rain. The other woman stayed back, and when it started pouring she took shelter under a tree, Kumar said.

Shankarappa then allegedly attacked her. As she resisted, he strangled the woman with the shirt she was wearing. He then dragged the dead body into a field and had sex with the corpse, the Times of India reported.

As the woman did not return home, her family members went out in search for her and found her body in the field. An autopsy confirmed she was sexually assaulted after being strangled to death.

Police launched an investigation and was able to nab Shankarappa. The charges against the accused have not been revealed.

In May, a similar incident took place in the U.S. state of Georgia. A man was arrested after he was allegedly caught having sex with a dead woman outside a local homeless shelter. Officials said at the time they had received a call about two people having intercourse on the front steps of the property. When deputies arrived, they found the 55-year-old man having sex with the woman.

Bibb County deputies approached the man and asked him to dress up. They then discovered the woman was unresponsive. An investigation showed she "had been deceased for some time," officials said. The man, identified as Kenny Obyran Whitehead, was charged with necrophilia.
