Man Throws Wife Off Airport's 4th Floor After Argument, Then Jumps Himself
A Chinese-American man jumped from the fourth floor of Taiwan's Taoyuan International Airport on Monday after throwing his wife over a guard rail from the same floor.
The 32-year-old man, surnamed Wan, and his 33-year-old wife, surnamed Chang, had an intense argument at the airport’s departure area Monday afternoon following which the man suddenly picked her up and threw her over the guardrails. She hit the side wall before landing in a safety net, 15-meters below. Realizing what he had done, Wan too jumped from the same spot and landed over her.
While Chang fell unconscious from head injuries, Wan sustained fractured ribs. The airport security staff freed them from safety net and rushed the couple to a nearby hospital for treatment. Chang regained consciousness Tuesday and was transferred to another hospital. Wan too was discharged and was under investigation for attempted homicide, Asia One reported.
Post his discharge, when asked about the reason for the act, Wan reportedly told the reporters, "I have died today; I don't have a tomorrow."
He also reportedly refused to co-operate with the police and told them, "I'm an American citizen -- Trump, please save me,” the World Of Buzz reported.
According to local reports, the couple had an argument over domestic issues during which Chang tried to stop Wan from returning to the United States. Wan had come down to visit his wife’s family for the Chinese New Year in February.
An eyewitness said she heard a woman shouting loudly and a few minutes later she heard a large crashing sound. She then noticed the woman lying on the safety net. A few seconds later, a man too jumped off the same floor and hit the railing of the escalator one floor below before falling on the woman. She speculated that the man intentionally pushed the woman post an argument and then attempted to kill himself, the Taiwan News reported.
The Taiwanese police were investigating the incident and reviewing the airport surveillance footage.
