A 40-year-old widower in India allegedly shot a woman who rebuffed his marriage proposal before fatally shooting himself.

The incident happened in Bijnor district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The now-deceased man, Gaurav Tyagi, had been pursuing the 21-year-old woman for some time, according to authorities. Tyagi intercepted the woman while she was on her way to a temple Saturday morning, The Times Of India reported, citing police.

At some point, the duo started arguing and in a fit of rage, the man pulled out an improvised pistol and shot the woman. The woman screamed for help as she fell to the ground, said police.

Passers-by heard the woman’s cry for help and rushed to the spot. Witnessing the crowd, Tyagi fled the crime scene, the report said. The woman was rushed to a nearby hospital where she received treatment for her bullet injuries. According to police, the victim is in stable condition.

Tyagi, who fled to his home following the incident, grew anxious and fatally shot himself with the gun. Later, police found his body on his blood-stained bed.

"We have learnt that Tyagi had turned widower a few years ago. He is survived by a son. He had been pursuing the woman of his village for a long. It was a one-sided affair," SP Sharamveer Singh was quoted as saying by TimesNow. "He had a tiff with the woman, following which in a fit of rage, he attempted to kill her and then ended his life."

In a similar incident, a man from Uttar Pradesh ran over his lover and live-in partner last month and staged it as an accident after she pressured him to marry her.

The woman’s husband said that five years after her marriage with him, she fell in love with the other man and moved in with the latter. The woman's lover was reluctant about marrying her and allegedly took her on a drive and killed her.

In June, a 21-year-old man in Kerala allegedly stabbed his former classmate to death for rejecting his romantic interest and also injured her 13-year-old sister, The Indian Express reported.
