A pregnant woman and her husband were electrocuted to death in the bathroom of their home in Hunan, China, on Friday.

The incident came to light after the young couple, who worked at the same factory, did not show up for work on Friday. The man’s brother decided to check on them and arrived at the home. When no one opened the door, the man entered the home through the fire escape. He then found his brother lying outside the bathroom door and his wife inside the bathroom.

Investigations revealed the unidentified couple died of accidental electrocution. The cause of the electrocution was not known. Police believe the woman was first electrocuted in the bathroom. Her husband then came to her aid but suffered the same fate as he was not wearing any slippers.

A resident of the building said she felt an electric shock while opening the building gate the night prior to the incident. She then alerted the landlord who closed the gate temporarily. There was a note on the gate which said it was closed due to “electric leakage.” The woman also said she heard two cries for help Thursday night but did not pay heed as she thought it was coming from the television. The following morning, a large crowd gathered outside the home and she learned that the couple had died.

Following the incident, the building was sealed up. Officers were investigating the electricity meters of the building. Due to no electricity, the residents of the building were forced to move to nearby hotels. However, the landlord was reportedly paying for the hotel expenses. Meanwhile, people close to the couple revealed they had a two-year-old daughter, who was living in their hometown. The investigation was ongoing.
