  • After extending Edinson Cavani's contract, Manchester United is now looking to sign a defender, a report said
  • United reportedly revived its interest in Real Madrid's Raphael Varane
  • The Red Devils are still keen on signing Harry Kane, according to the report

Manchester United could be plotting another transfer move following the closing of Edinson Cavani’s deal, according to a new report.

A hint at the narrative of Manchester United’s summer implies that the club will be eager to land a defender. Among the names mentioned at the moment is Real Madrid star Raphael Varane, Manchester Evening News reported, citing unnamed sources.

The Red Devils are “expected to go all out” in pursuing a new center-back after putting an end to Cavani’s then-exit saga, the report said.

As early as now, the report noted that Manchester United is already “holding exploratory talks” with Varane, who is also a target of Liverpool, as he considers parting ways with Real Madrid.

Manchester United already fancied signing Varane “10 years ago” and have now rekindled their interest in the highly-regarded defender as they try to bolster their defense, the report added. It was also said that the club’s director of football negotiations Matt Judge is spearheading the potential transfer of Varane to Old Trafford.

Some believe that with the Cavani deal already sealed, Manchester United will not be as aggressive in attempting to sign another striker in the next transfer window.

However, according to famed transfer insider and “The Transfer Window” podcast host Ian McGarry, the “information” they have gathered implies that Manchester United will still be chasing Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

“[Edinson] Cavani’s contract has led to people speculating [Manchester] United will not look to sign another striker in the summer,” McGarry said. “However, we have checked this and it is our information that that is not the case. It’s certainly not the case in the Harry Kane story.”

McGarry further said that Manchester United will be “frightened” by Tottenham’s “unrealistic” demands in exchange for Kane, but the England captain is still on the Red Devils’ transfer wish list.

“Kane is very much desired by Manchester United,” he added. “They of course will be frightened somewhat of [Tottenham chief] Daniel Levy’s £170 million ($239 million) asking price for his captain. That is unrealistic in the current financial environment anyway. But it is our information that Kane is still very much on United’s radar.”

Kane’s future with the Spurs has been deemed uncertain after it has become apparent that the team will not win a trophy again this season. Widespread rumors claimed that the prolific goalscorer will once again seek a move away from Tottenham at the end of the season.
