Man United Rumors: Fernandes Teases Red Devils May Sign Attacker 'Technically Better' Than Him
KEY POINTS
- Bruno Fernandes heaped praise on his former teammate, Napoli's Piotr Zielinski
- Fernandes suggested that Zielinski could possibly join Manchester United
- Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso is also convinced that the midfielder is a top player
Bruno Fernandes has hinted at working on the possible transfer of one of his former co-stars to Manchester United.
This season, Fernandes has proven that he can be Manchester United’s next superstar. The Portuguese has worked efficiently alongside prolific striker Marcus Rashford. However, it appears that the attacking midfielder is keen on bringing in more reinforcements to Old Trafford.
Recently speaking to Poland's Canal+, Fernandes raved about his former Udinese teammate Piotr Zielinski, whom he described as “technically better” than him. What’s even more interesting is that the two-time Portuguese Best Player suggested Manchester United may potentially sign Zielinski in the future.
"Technically, I can say that [Piotr] Zielinski is better trained than I am,” Fernandes admitted. "We had a good challenge. I think in the past, Zielinski was actually a bit shy. He was really young then, just like me, at that time. However, we came from different countries, different mentality, and it was different for both of us. I have a really good relationship with Piotr.”
"He’s a top guy, I like him a lot,” he added. “He is one of the people I met in Italy with whom I am in touch all the time. I spoke to him a few months ago and told him that I would like to play with him again. So, who knows what the future has waiting for us. For me, he is a really, really top player."
Zielinski is currently playing for Serie A side Napoli. Like Fernandes, Napoli manager Gennaro Gattuso is also convinced that his midfield star is already a “top player.”
For Gattuso, “the only thing” missing in Zielinski’s game is the ability to bag multiple goals per season.
"[Piotr] Zielinski seems to be dancing with the ball, there are not many such players,” Gattuso assessed earlier in the season. “The only thing he lacks to become a truly top player is to score 7-8 goals per season. [But] he is capable of it.”
Shockingly, Zielinski proved Gattuso that right this season, having already notched a total of 10 goals across all competitions to date.
Apart from scoring goals, Zielinski also revealed his exceptional playmaking skills this season, having registered a career-high 10 assists.
It didn’t take long for rivaling Italian top-flight side Juventus to notice Zielinski’s fine form. The 27-year-old’s name is being linked to a sensational swap deal involving Juve’s center back Merih Demiral, according to Italian outlet Tele 7 Gold.
