Man United Rumors: New Twist Puts Edinson Cavani Replacement's Transfer In Jeopardy
KEY POINTS
- Edinson Cavani is expected to leave Manchester United at the end of the season
- The Red Devils identify Eintracht Frankfurt's Andre Silva as a suitable replacement
- Borussia Dortmund is also planning to recruit Silva
Manchester United isn’t a step closer to sealing a deal with a potential Edinson Cavani replacement.
After an impressive debut season with Manchester United, it is becoming more certain that Cavani is leaving Old Trafford.
As early as now, the Red Devils are said to have already earmarked Eintracht Frankfurt striker Andre Silva as a credible alternative for Cavani.
However, Silva’s transfer may have to face a stumbling block as Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund is also considering signing him should Erling Haaland decide to take his talents elsewhere this summer, German outlet Bild reported.
The report added that Silva is likely to leave Eintracht Frankfurt at the end of the season, but at this point, there’s still no clear scenario as to where he is headed.
Borussia Dortmund, meanwhile, has been keen on keeping Haaland. However, the German outfit is now becoming more open to the idea of letting go of its star forward.
What’s even more interesting is that Manchester United has also been keeping tabs on Haaland for quite some time now.
In fact, the Norwegian star is believed to be the club’s top target in the next transfer window.
The only thing that has been slowing the Red Devils from making a move for Haaland is the player's hefty price tag.
As for Silva, Manchester United earlier became the favorite to sign the Portuguese striker, with the club expected to take advantage of his situation.
It was previously reported that Silva had a €30 million ($36 million) release fee injected into his contract, but one of his representatives later confirmed that the said exit clause doesn’t exist.
Silva is enjoying a scintillating season with Eintracht Frankfurt, having already bagged 23 goals and seven assists in just 27 Bundesliga appearances.
The 27-year-old has been a key figure in the German side’s bid for a top-four finish this year.
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, on the other hand, earlier stated that his club has been trying to convince Cavani to stay.
"We have had upfront and honest meetings. There's no secret, we want to keep him [Cavani],” Solskjaer told Sky Sports after Manchester United’s recent 3-1 win over Tottenham.
"He's contemplating and thinking hard and long about what he wants to do, and I understand,” the manager added. “He knows what I want, him at Old Trafford at the Stretford End scoring a diving header, there's not a better feeling. So let's wait and see.”
