  • Solskjaer remains undecided on who Manchester United's primary goalkeeper will be
  • Dean Henderson is expected to compete for the position once he returns to the first team
  • Solskjaer believes that having de Gea and Henderson share games will be best for the team

Despite David de Gea’s heroics at London Stadium this weekend, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is yet to announce who will be the team’s number one goalkeeper.

ESPN’s Rob Dawson reports that Solskjaer has not yet committed to the 30-year-old Spaniard as backup Dean Henderson is expected to challenge for the position once he returns to the first team.

“Solskjaer has been impressed with De Gea's application in training after the Spain international chose to return early following the European Championship, but sources have told ESPN that Henderson has also been given encouragement the gloves remain up for grabs,” Dawson wrote.

Dawson also mentioned that Solskjaer has been urged by former Red Devils teammate-turned-analyst Gary Neville to make his choice.

However, the Norwegian manager fully believes that competition between the two keepers will benefit everyone involved, especially the club.

Solskjaer has already announced that de Gea will be sitting on the bench when they face West Ham United in a Carabao Cup fixture on Wednesday, September 22, and either Henderson or Tom Heaton will be with the starting eleven.

In the past, the Manchester United manager has expressed his desire to have both Henderson and de Gea split games in order to preserve either man for the latter stages of the English Premier League season.

The goalkeeper situation at Old Trafford is yet to rear its head since Henderson was recovering from a bout with COVID-19, but the English keeper has played two matches with the Under-23 squad to get him ready for the first-team action.

The de Gea-Henderson situation has been one of Manchester United’s bigger storylines to follow throughout this season as the latter has expressed his desire to be the club’s primary keeper despite the lack of transfer rumors around de Gea.

There was reason to worry that de Gea’s goalkeeping instincts have faltered, but his game-saving penalty against West Ham United shows he has more left in him.

Should Solskjaer select Henderson for the match on Wednesday, it becomes a must-watch game for Manchester United fans.

The Red Devils’ next Premier League fixture is against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday, September 25.
