A 29-year-old man has been handed a 25-year prison sentence for raping a 75-year-old woman in Henry County, Georgia, in February.
Travale Farris, of McDonough, Georgia, pleaded guilty Thursday to one count each of rape, aggravated sexual battery, kidnapping, false imprisonment, burglary, exploitation and intimidation of an elder person, and three counts of criminal attempt to commit a felony, WSB-TV reported.
In exchange for pleading guilty, Farris was sentenced to 25 years in prison and will be on probation for the rest of his life.
Aside from the jail sentence, Farris will have to register as a sex offender and have no contact with any of the victims. He was also ordered to stay away from the Heritage at McDonough Senior Living Center.
In February, Farris was able to enter one unit at the Heritage at McDonough Senior Living complex and sexually assault the elderly victim, who resided there. He then “casually walked out of the apartment,” police said.
Authorities arrested Farris in March after a DNA match. Before that, the only thing known was that the assailant was wearing a Nike fanny pack-style bag.
“This was a horrific crime and we are grateful to bring justice for this survivor,” Henry County District Attorney Darius Pattillo said. “We wanted to ensure that Mr. Farris cannot harm any more of our county’s elderly population. Under this sentence, there is no possibility of parole and he must serve every day of that 25 years and continue to be supervised by officers for the rest of his life.”
Prior to Farris' arrest, police suspected that this was not the only attack. Farris was also caught on surveillance video attempting to break into other homes.
A $7,500 reward was offered in February to help boost efforts to find the suspect who attacked the elderly woman. It took a joint effort by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, McDonough police, Hampton police, Henry County police, Locust Grove police and the GBI to collar Farris in March.
It was the Henry County SWAT team that executed a search at a home off Adams Circle in McDonough where Farris was found and taken into custody without incident, WSB-TV previously reported. No other attacks were reported aside from the 75-year-old woman's case.
