Diego Carlos has reportedly been made available by Sevilla for this summer, and this is likely to put Manchester City and Liverpool on alert.
Following an impressive debut season with Sevilla, the Spanish side is now reportedly willing to listen to offers for their in-demand defender Carlos.
According to Marca (via Teamtalk), Sevilla is putting the valuable but quite controversial LaLiga star up for sale this summer despite having a notable season intensifying the squad’s defense. Sevilla apparently noticed that the 27-year-old’s value “skyrocketed,” and though the LaLiga contenders are not really aggressive in raising funds, this has reportedly urged them to sell Carlos when the transfer window opens.
Reports suggest that Sevilla might want to capitalize on the big opportunity to make a major capital gain on a player that could increase its long-term financial stability. The club is “happy to sell” Carlos and is already “looking forward” to doing so, the report said.
Carlos’ availability is believed to have put early Premier League suitors on alert, with Manchester City and Liverpool being mentioned in the mix.
Marca suggested that Jurgen Klopp’s side has earmarked Carlos as the perfect partner for Virgil Van Dijk at the center-back position, making Liverpool one of his possible destinations.
Manchester City, on the other hand, is also said to be interested in adding Carlos into their squad. After evidently struggling in securing a well-rounded center-back this season, City is reportedly keen on hunting a natural defender this summer.
On top of that, their failure to replace Vincent Kompany last summer became a major factor in them losing their Premier League title to Liverpool this year.
It can be recalled that Pep Guardiola has had to convert Fernandinho and Rodri into defenders at times this season in order to put some weight into their defense. Therefore, adding a more natural center-back could really be a great move this summer.
Carlos has played in 34 LaLiga matches and was able to instantly settle in during his first season in Spain. However, the Brazilian defender generated quite a buzz in LaLiga this season after viciously tackling Barcelona star Luis Suarez, which, in turn, angered Lionel Messi during an intense match.
After making a hard tackle on Suarez from behind, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner went straight to Carlos and shoved him hard. Realizing that Messi laid a hand on him in the middle of a game, Carlos apparently decided to intentionally tumble to the ground. However, the replay showed that it was exaggerated and delayed.
Fans criticized Carlos over the incident, and he has become a controversial player since then.
