The battle for Manchester was well and truly won by the blue half, as Manchester City demolished Man United to a 6-1 humiliation at Old Trafford.
Braces from Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko along with goals from Sergio Aguero and David Silva left Man United licking wounds from their heaviest home defeat since the 1930s.
Although United started the better side, they were restricted to long shots as City soaked up pressure and attempted to strike on the counter. As the game progressed, they came into their own. It started when Balotelli struck on 20 minutes with a sublime finish from just inside the box. He celebrated by revealing a T-shirt bearing the message 'Why Always Me?' - in reference to his latest headline grabbing incident wherein he set fire to his home on Saturday.
At half-time, the score read 1-0. However, all Ferguson's plan's for the second half were shattered when Jonny Evans was sent off for a lazy challenge on Balotelli, as the last man. With the man-advantage, it was only a matter of time before City broadened their lead. Balotelli and Aguero did just that to make the scoreline 3-0.
Darren Fletcher then got one back for United with fine, curling effort from outside the box. However, City continued attacking with substitute Edin Dzeko grabbing a brace before the excellent David Silva rounded-off the scoring.
Man City now lead second placed United by five points. But this result will mean much more than that to both sides of Manchester, for contrasting reasons.
