Manchester United got back to winning ways with a 3-0 victory over Aldershot in the Carling Cup, although it would only serve limited reprieve from the weekend's mauling in the Manchester derby.

In the EBB Stadium at the Recreation Ground, the Red Devils started patchily, with Nemanja Vidic's wild tackle earning him a booking. However, Dimitar Berbatov scored the opener on 15 minutes to set them on their way. The Bulgarian has found opportunities hard to come-by, despite being last season's top-scorer for United and looked determined to prove he's still got it.

Michael Owen, another bit-part striker for Man United, scored on 41 minutes with a typically instinctive finish.

Antonio Valencia lashed home the third, early in the second half, from distance to secure the result.
