KEY POINTS

  • Roberto Mancini is the current boss of Italy national team
  • He led Italy to European Championship glory this year
  • Mancini was the first manager to win the Premier League with Man City

Manchester United are reportedly considering a "shock" move for former Premier League-winning manager Roberto Mancini as their head coach for next summer.

Mancini, who is the current manager of the Italy national team, could be available if the Azzurri fail to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, reported The Telegraph. Even if Italy does not qualify and chooses to not sack Mancini, a job from Old Trafford could be enough to change his mind.

The European champions will next face North Macedonia in the World Cup qualifiers semi-final on March 24 before a potential meeting with either Portugal or Turkey in the final five days.

Apart from Mancini, Manchester United are also considering Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers for their head coach's role.

After a poor phase in the 2021-22 campaign, Manchester United recently sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their boss and have named Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season.

Mancini would be a great option for Manchester United as the Italian boss has turned around the side since taking over in 2018. He has led the Azzurri from being a struggling side over the last few years to winning European Championship.

Moreover, he has solid connections with Manchester and he is the first manager to win the Premier League title for City.

Mancini is not Manchester United's top choice though, according to soccer website 90Min. The report has also claimed that while Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have turned down the Red Devils' advances for Pochettino. The former Spurs boss remains the Old Trafford's first choice even now.

With 18 points from 13 matches, Manchester United are placed eighth in the 2021-22 Premier League table. In their previous fixture, they held table leaders Chelsea at a 1-1 draw and claimed a crucial point. The Red Devils will next host Arsenal in the league Thursday.
