Manchester United Diverts Focus On Juventus Injury-Prone Winger
KEY POINTS
- Douglas Costa could be short-term fix for Manchester United in lieu of Jadon Sancho
- Costa could use change of scenery and get football career back on track
- Red Devils weighing pros and cons of considering Costa
Manchester United needs to find alternatives with their chances of landing Jadon Sancho looking dim this summer. Borussia Dortmund seems ready to move forward with the English winger after the Red Devils failed to meet their asking price and the set deadline. A looming option is Douglas Costa of Juventus, someone that La Madamba is ready to part with.
Costa seems imminently headed out of the Juventus door and could be better off playing for another team. United is seen as a logical destination. The camp of the 29-year-old Brazilian is believed to have touched base with the Red Devils through a transfer that remains up in the air.
Speaking to Football Daily, Gianluca di Marzio said that United is considering the former Bayern Munich winger. However, one thing that the Red Devils appear to be worried about is his history of injuries. Costa started in only seven Serie A games this season, one of the reasons he was unable to perform well with Juventus.
That is worth considering but some people feel that Costa could fit with United. With their chances on Sancho practically snuffed, giving the Brazilian a chance to show his wares this coming season makes sense.
"If you’re looking for a right-sided player that can come in onto his left foot and get crosses in and get shots away and link up with the front player, he’s an excellent player," former Arsenal midfielder Stewart Robinson said of Costa via ESPN UK.
Aside from injuries, Robinson also pointed out how Costa has had disciplinary problems. But despite the things that the Brazilian has gone through, the former Arsenal midfielder believes Costa remains a good player and deserves better opportunities to show what he is truly capable of. That chance could be given by the Red Devils.
"When he was at Bayern Munich he was a magnificent player and I think if he went to Manchester United, he could rediscover that form," he said.
It remains to be seen if United will give Costa a try. They could try him out for the coming season and revisit Sancho next summer. Though they are still trying to pull some strings, there is no denying that the Red Devils may be wasting their time with Sancho seemingly set to play with Dortmund for now.
