Manchester United Give Ultimatum To Barcelona's Frenkie De Jong; Details Here
KEY POINTS
- Frenkie de Jong is contracted with Barcelona until 2026
- He is reluctant to leave Barca because the club owes him $20 million
- Manchester United have made De Jong one of their top targets this summer
Manchester United have reportedly given an ultimatum to FC Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to decide if he wants to join the Red Devils this summer.
De Jong remains on Barcelona's list of players that are on sale in the ongoing summer window. While the Catalans have an agreement in place with Manchester United over his transfer, the player is yet to give a green signal.
Manchester United have offered him a week's time to decide his future beyond the 2022 summer window, Spanish outlet THE SPORT reported. The team has been trying to secure a deal for De Jong for around 14 weeks now.
Manchester United are reportedly prepared to pay $65 million, plus $20 million add-ons to Barcelona for De Jong, who joined the Catalans from Ajax in 2019.
Back in 2020, De Jong signed a new contract with Barcelona that had tied him down with the Catalans until 2026. His agents Ali Dursun and Hasan Cetinkay have told Barcelona that their talented client has "no intention" of leaving and doesn't want to take a pay cut either, according to Fabrizio Romano, who has a credible record in the European transfer market.

Barcelona owe De Jong almost $20 million in deferred salary payments, according to The Guardian.
It will certainly affect the club's salary limit if the player doesn't take a pay cut ahead of the 2022-23 season. Therefore, Barcelona are desperate to sell him and get rid of his salary from their bracket this summer.
Another problem involving De Jong's wages was that he did not receive his full salary during the COVID-19 pandemic. The club had promised to pay it over a span of four years. The Dutch midfielder, who delayed receiving those wages only to help the financially struggling Barcelona, now is reluctant to leave as he believes the club owes him a lot.
