  • Sergio Romero's reported move to Everton FC failed to materialize
  • Romero's wife, Eliana Guercio, asked Manchester United to respect her husband and let him go
  • Romero is unlikely to get exposure with Dean Henderson and David de Gea around

The wife of Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero has called out the club after he failed to depart Old Trafford this transfer window.

United has three goalkeepers right now in David de Gea, Dean Henderson and Romero. The Red Devils were previously expected to deal out one of them, with Romero being the likely candidate.

The 33-year-old shot-stopper seemed set for a move to Everton FC after going down the pecking order at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, nothing transpired when the transfer deadline lapsed, Goal reported. This means Romero will be staying with Manchester United and there is no telling if he will get exposure in the future.

The development drew the ire of Romero’s wife, Eliana Guercio. She took to Instagram to express her disappointment and called on the Red Devils to allow her husband to seek opportunities outside of Old Trafford.

"Sergio Romero worked hard for his club. Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him. He helped the team [reach] 4 finals/semifinals, and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all. It is time to return the opportunity and let him go. RESPECT FOR ONCE," Guercio's post read.

The chances of seeing Romero play for United are not looking that good. He joined the Red Devils in 2015, featuring in matches with Monaco, Sampdoria and AZ Alkmaar.

He has made only seven appearances in the Premier League in five seasons but featured in 61 total games. He made 23 appearances in the Europa League. Aside from that, he was also part of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield title runs.

For now, Romero will have to wait and see what the future holds. He could still be given exposure in select matches, but it is unlikely that he will be utilized as much as De Gea and Henderson.

As mentioned in a previous post, Henderson signed a long-term deal with United following an impressive stint with Sheffield United last season. With De Gea performing poorly, Henderson was seen as the likely alternative to make the first team.

It has now become a battle between the two players, with Romero slowly fading from United’s list of shot-stoppers that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will choose from.
