A Manchester United loanee is looking forward to an active season with his new team.
Tahith Chong will spend the next season on loan once again after Manchester United sent him to Championship club Birmingham City, the team announced Friday. The winger will be joining Birmingham’s first team as the Red Devils try to keep him active while he’s waiting for a chance to land a spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad.
Ahead of his Championship debut, the 21-year-old expressed his excitement for the upcoming season and revealed what he has in mind in terms of contributions. Brimming with confidence, Chong stressed that Birmingham can expect him to attack, “dribble and beat players.”
“I’m really looking forward to getting to know the Championship and to see what it brings,” Chong said. “I’m a player who likes to get at players, like to dribble and beat players. I’m fast and I’ll try to bring that to the team.”
“I’m looking forward to the season and to meet all the fans,” he added. “I think I’m even more excited than they are. I’m excited to get started. Excited to get to know my new teammates and everyone at the club.”
Chong went on to reveal that he already had a discussion with the club’s coach regarding a few things to improve.
“I spoke to the manager here and heard about the plans the club has for this season and for me as well,” the midfielder revealed. “He spoke to me about some improvement points and I’m looking forward to working with him. I want to come here and become a better player and develop.”
After bagging five goals in six league matches for Manchester United in the English Premier League Division 2, Chong was loaned out to Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga where he spent the first half of the last season.
In January, he made the switch to Club Brugge and won his first domestic league title.
Prior to his loan move to Birmingham, Chong was yearning to “achieve some stability” in terms of playing time.
Aware that being called up for first-team football might not happen at Manchester United at this point, Chong stressed that he will do his best regardless of what the future holds for him.
“I look at it step by step," the Dutchman said about his situation in April. “I can only do my utmost. And enjoy the game. I always try to play football with a smile.”
“You will have to prove yourself there anyway,” he added.
