Manchester United is now in pole position to sign its top target, Real Madrid star Sergio Reguilon, after loaning club Sevilla completed the signing of left-back Marcos Acuna.
The Red Devils have only managed to complete a few major signings this summer. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is still linked to a move for Reguilon as the transfer window approaches the Oct. 5 deadline.
United is determined to sign Reguilon this transfer window following the 23-year-old's breakthrough 2019/20 season on loan at Sevilla, Spanish outlet Marca reported. The English club has been pursuing the talented defender to add depth to the left-back position and is now in negotiations with Madrid and parties involved for his transfer.
United wants to buy Reguilon outright and completely cut all his ties with parent club Madrid, according to the report. However, the reigning La Liga champions want to add a buyback clause in the agreement to reacquire the Spanish left-back after one or two seasons.
The amount involved in Reguilon’s transfer is yet to be disclosed and will depend on the terms set by both parties. But the deal for the 23-year-old may be sealed for around €25 million ($30 million), the report said.
Madrid initially wanted €30 million ($35 million) for Reguilon, but United does not plan to pay this much for the Spaniard, Evening Standard reported. The English club also won't agree to the addition of a buyback option for the player.
Reguilon may be keen on moving to Old Trafford as well as it is believed the left-back will struggle to find a spot in Zinedine Zidane’s squad next season with Marcelo and Ferland Mendy already in place at Madrid.
On top of that, his loaning club, Sevilla, has signed a new left-back in Sporting CP's Acuna despite speculations that the Spanish side was intending to grant him a second loan spell, making United a more suitable landing spot, 90min reported.
Amid the talks surrounding Reguilon’s possible transfer, Madrid boss Zidane is said to have already plotted a plan. Recent reports from Spain revealed that the renowned manager is overseeing the Madrid-United negotiations for Reguilon’s transfer with “patience” as he is aiming for a shock move in the future.
Zidane sees the Reguilon deal as a way to bring United superstar Paul Pogba to Madrid. Apparently, the Frenchman is eager to have Pogba on his squad and hopes that the Red Devils would welcome talks for Pogba's move to Los Blancos.
