Manchester United News: In-Form Forward Doubtful For Home Game Vs Omonia
KEY POINTS
- Manchester United defeated Omonia 3-2 last week in Europa League
- Marcus Rashford scored a brace against Omonia
- Man Utd recently defeated Everton 2-1 in the league
Manchester United's in-form forward Anthony Martial is doubtful for their upcoming Europa League fixture against Omonia.
In the reverse fixture between Manchester United and Omonia earlier this month, Martial played a vital role as he came off the bench and scored at GSP Stadium. The Red Devils first conceded a goal in the first half before Marcus Rashford canceled the hosts' lead with his 53rd-minute strike. Martial put Manchester United in the lead with his goal a few minutes later.
A fine show in the 2-1 win over Omonia earned Martial a place in Erik ten Hag's starting XI in their away Premier League game against Everton on Sunday. Unfortunately, Martial lasted on the Goodison Park field just for 29 minutes before he was forced to walk off because of a back problem. He was replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo, who eventually netted the winner for the Red Devils.
Ten Hag confirmed that Martial's latest injury is a new one and further tests would need to be conducted to confirm the extent of the injury, according to Man Utd's media.
Earlier this season, Martial missed nine games due to a hamstring injury and Achilles Irritation. The Frenchman's injury lay-off ended just in time for Manchester United's derby clash with Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the Premier League on Oct. 2. Although the Red Devils lost the game 6-3 at Etihad Stadium, Martial had his moments as he assisted two out of his side's three goals.
That followed with a goal against Omonia in Cyprus. So far, Martial has netted three goals and provided two assists in four appearances for Ten Hag's side in all competitions in the 2022-23 campaign.
Meanwhile, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, who has recently been sidelined with a hamstring problem, and was allowed to travel to Portugal last week for a break, has returned and could feature against Omonia, according to Sports Mole.
It was earlier reported that Ten Hag had angered a set of Manchester United players by allowing Maguire to do his recovery in Portugal. The decision left players displeased because the Dutch boss had previously asked all injured players to remain at the club's Carrington training base and return to fitness there.
After Manchester United's Europa League game against Omonia at Old Trafford on Thursday, the Red Devils are scheduled to host Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday. Eight games into the 2022-23 league season, Ten Hag and Co. are placed fifth in the table with 15 points. They are still nine points behind leaders Arsenal.
