  • Manchester United management saw Ralf Rangnick as the perfect man for the job to close out the season
  • Rangnick is highly regarded around football circles for his high-level understanding of tactics
  • Manchester United looks to continue its momentum against Arsenal on Thursday, December 2

Manchester United has recently named Ralf Rangnick as its manager for the remainder of the season, and the reasoning behind his appointment has been revealed.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Rangnick was one of the club’s favorites to replace the recently-sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and sources from within the club disclosed to the outlet that he has the capabilities to give the Red Devils a clear identity on the field.

“[Manchester] United believe his leadership and technical skills make him ideally equipped to oversee a successful second half of the campaign,” chief Manchester United writer Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News wrote.

Rangnick took an interview with Manchester United’s football director John Murtough, technical director Darren Fletcher and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward prior to being given the job.

The father of the high-pressure "gegenpressing" technique impressed the Manchester United contingent enough to have them quickly draft up a contract and offer him his terms.

Rangnick initially rejected their offer, but Murtough pushed for a two-year consultancy role with the Red Devils after his interim stint.

The revised offer convinced Rangnick to sign with Manchester United and is set to take over the reins from current interim manager Michael Carrick once he receives his Governing Body Endorsement from the English Football Association before securing his work visa.

Rangnick is highly regarded around the football scene thanks to his "gegenpressing" tactic that had since been adopted by his disciples like Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, Bayern Munich manager Julien Nagelsmann and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp.

Then nicknamed “The Professor” as a joke for being one of the first coaches to publicize football tactics, it stuck with him and has turned into a loving show of respect for his contributions to the sport.

Manchester United and its fans are enjoying a resurgent run of matches this past week, scoring two goals against Villareal to secure their spot in the next stage of the UEFA Champions League and pulling out a draw against English Premier League leaders Chelsea this past weekend.

The Chelsea fixture should have been a 1-0 win in their favor after Jadon Sancho took advantage of a miscue from Italian defensive midfielder Jorginho, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s errant challenge in their own box resulted in a penalty for the Blues, which they converted quite easily.

Manchester United will next face Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday, December 2, a match that they hope to win as they inch closer to the top four of the Premier League.
