Manchester United Rumors: Cristiano Ronaldo’s Heir Apparent Eyed For Old Trafford Move
KEY POINTS
- Manchester United is believed to be considering a move for Atletico Madrid's Joao Felix
- Felix joined the Spanish side for a record transfer back in 2019 but has failed to mesh with the team
- Joining the Red Devils could prove most beneficial for him due to his connection with Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United is believed to be interested in signing Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammate on the Portuguese national team, Joao Felix, from Atletico Madrid.
As reported by Spanish outlet Todo Fichajes, Felix is inching closer towards a departure from Atletico Madrid rather than an extension because of him having trouble fitting in with club manager Diego Simeone, better known as “El Cholo”.
It has already been three years since Felix arrived at Atletico Madrid for a massive transfer fee of €126 million ($146 million), the Spanish side’s most expensive signing yet and the fourth-highest sum ever paid in the sport.
However, Felix has struggled ever since his move to Atletico Madrid.
According to the same report, Felix and Portugal’s national team coach Fernando Santos have constantly buttheads and have even led to the 21-year-old not being given the call-up when the team was battling through injuries.
His style of play, which is highly reminiscent of a young Cristiano Ronaldo, simply has not translated well enough for Atletico Madrid to keep their interest in him, despite playing alongside world-class talent like Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann.
Widely regarded as the “Menino de Ouro” (The Golden Boy), the versatile f5-foot-11 wonderkid from Portugal made his professional debut for Benfica B, Benfica’s reserve team, in 2016.
Felix’s promotion to the main team for the 2018-19 season would prove to be a magnificent opportunity for him, helping Benfica win the Primeira League for a record 37th time while scoring 15 goals of his own.
Felix was expected to be the main man at Atletico Madrid’s home field, the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium, but has since struggled with injuries that limited him to just 86 total appearances.
It is now believed that a move elsewhere could be the most beneficial thing for his career.
Joining Manchester United might end up being the right thing to do as Ronaldo could be the mentor that he needs to help ground him, while also unlocking his full potential.
The Red Devils currently have a wealth of talent in the forward and wings department, but a talent like Felix cannot be ignored, should they acquire him.
Manchester United is currently miring through a mucky situation at Old Trafford after losing to eternal rivals Manchester City this past weekend.
It is believed that they are considering former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the Manchester United sidelines.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United has not made contact with any other managerial candidates just yet.
