  • Man Utd still want Ronaldo to stay this season

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel reportedly did not sign Cristiano Ronaldo this summer because of former Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick.

Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move to Chelsea as the new club owner Todd Boehly was keen on signing the Manchester United superstar and saw him as the ideal player to lead their weak attack.

However, Tuchel was against the move following his conversation with Rangnick, who was Manchester United's interim head coach then, reported Marca.com.

Rangnick convinced Tuchel that Ronaldo won't fit in well in his setup due to his disinterest in pressing the opposition.

Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes has once again made contact with Chelsea ahead of the 2022 summer transfer deadline, according to Goal.com.

This development has taken place after Chelsea's talks with FC Barcelona over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's transfer have stalled. While Manchester United had enquired about Aubameyang, the Gabaon national is reportedly keen on joining the Blues instead because he wants to play Champions League.

There have been very few clubs who have shown interest in roping in Ronaldo, including Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, and Bayern Munich.

Manchester United have not won a single trophy since the 2016-17 season. Last term, the Red Devils finished outside the top four of the Premier League table and as a result, they failed to secure Champions League soccer for the 2022-23 campaign.

Ronaldo, who has never played in the Europa League, Europe's second-tier competition, has been desperately trying to leave the Old Trafford side but nothing has materialized so far.

Four games into the 2022-23 Premier League, Ronaldo has started only one game for Manchester United, which came in their 4-0 defeat to Brentford.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's current boss, Erik ten Hag has once again insisted that Ronaldo is very much a part of the club's plans. "We plan with him (Ronaldo), so we want him to stay. That is what we want," ten Hag said in a recent interview.

After losing their opening two games this season, Manchester United have bounced back with victories over Liverpool FC at Old Trafford and Southampton at St. Mary's. Their next league game is a big one as they are set to host Arsenal on Sunday. The Gunners are the only side to have won each of their league games so far this term.
