Manchester United Update: Striker May Stay At Old Trafford For At Least One More Year
KEY POINTS
- Edinson Cavani will be rewarded with a one-year extension if talks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer go well
- Cavani is proving to be valuable despite his age
- The Red Devils are staying the course as they eye titles
Edinson Cavani has proven that he still has what it takes to play football despite his age. When Manchester United took him in, most felt it was a bad investment, but much to fans' surprise, the Uruguayan striker has bucked the odds by becoming an integral part of the Red Devils.
Hence, it comes as no surprise that Man United has plans to hand Cavani a contract extension, Sky Sports reported. Initially signed only for a year, the Red Devils have an option to keep him for another 12 months. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed the club plans to hold talks with the 34-year-old player about prolonging his stay at Old Trafford.
Right now, Cavani is out nursing a muscle injury. He did not travel with United when the Red Devils beat Turin 4-0 in the Europa League. But it appears his value goes beyond that.
This season, Cavani has accounted for seven goals in 24 matches so far. It is a testament to the fine form of the Uruguayan star, who joined the Red Devils via free agency last October. Cavani ended his stint with Paris Saint-Germain prior to moving to Old Trafford.
"We'll sit down with him and speak with him in the near future, of course, to see his plans and our plans. You always speak to your players and with his contract situation, we're very pleased with what he's done," Solskjaer said.
The value of Cavani goes beyond playing his heart out each time his number is called. He is also seen as influential to other players in the fold, helping in the development of players like Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.
As for the Red Devils, the club is trying to stay the course. They are coming off a 3-1 win over Everton and moved 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League. It was their 17th consecutive win across all competitions. And from the looks of it, Solskjaer is making sure that everyone is on the same page moving forward.
"We are second and of course your ambition then is to not end any lower than that, so we are going to have to put a good run together if we want to put any pressure on City this season," the Red Devils manager stated.
