Preview: After suffering defeat in their opening Premier League match of the season for the first time since 2004, Manchester United will be desperate for three points against Fulham to prevent falling into an early hole in their efforts to regain the title.
United's crippling injuries in defense were crudely exposed by Everton on Monday night as Marouane Fellaini took full advantage of Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia playing out of position at the back. The bad news for Sir Alex Ferguson is that his injury headaches will not be eased by the time Fulham come to Old Trafford on Saturday.
Ferguson confirmed that he expects new signing Alexander Buttner to be involved, though the left-back should be among the substitutes.
After appearing off the bench at Goodison Park, there is expected to be a full debut on Saturday for Robin van Persie. There will be much fascination as to how Ferguson incorporates the Dutch forward into his starting lineup.
Fellow new signing Shinji Kagawa was the brightest spark in defeat against Everton as he provided a skillful, creative link between midfield and attack. It is hard to envisage the Japan international playing in his favored No. 10 role with both Van Persie and Wayne Rooney up front, so one of them is likely to be forced out wide.
Given his struggling performance on Monday, and the previous versatility he has shown, that may well be Rooney.
Despite those attacking options, United can expect to have it far from their own way against a Fulham side that opened their season with a morale-boosting 5-0 victory over Norwich. The result was a welcome one for boss Martin Jol after the buildup to the fixture had been dominated by Clint Dempsey's exclusion. The attacking midfielder will again be missing on Saturday as Jol continues to stress that the player is not committed to the club amid interest from Liverpool.
New signing Miladen Petric signaled that he could be the man to help ease the potential loss of Dempsey's goals, as he capped a fine debut with two goals. Both he and Costa Rican Bryan Ruiz will look to profit from United's weakness in defense.
Manchester United (probable)
G: De Gea
D: Rafael, Carrick, Vidic, Evra
M: Scholes, Cleverley
Valencia, Kagawa, Rooney
F: Van Persie
Fulham (probable)
G: Schwarzer
D: Riether, Hangeland, Hughes, Riise
M: Duff, Diarra, Dembele, Kacaniklic
F: Ruiz
Petric
Prediction: With Petric showing a good early understanding with youngster Alexander Kacaniklic and Bryan Ruiz, Fulham have enough about them to continue to expose Manchester United's weakened defense. But that might not be enough with Kagawa pulling the strings and Van Persie looking to make it a memorable home debut.
Manchester United 2-1 Fulham
