  • Guardiola believes Man Utd will challenge for Premier League title in 2020-21
  • Guardiola's side are the reigning champions
  • Liverpool are two wins away from winning the title this season

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola believes derby rivals Manchester United are going to be among the teams who would challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Man Utd are currently placed fifth in the 2019-20 Premier League table. With 12 wins, 10 losses and eight draws, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side is five points away from securing the final Champions League spot for next season.

Meanwhile, Guardiola’s Man City are the reigning champions but are 23 points behind leaders Liverpool in the ongoing campaign. If Man City, who are set to take on Burnley next in the league, lose the game, Liverpool will be crowned champions, provided they defeat Cyrstal Palace at Anfield on Wednesday.

In a recent interview, Guardiola has pinpointed where his side needs to improve, while he also insisted that the Reds will continue to remain strong in the league.

“Hopefully we can learn from our beginning to the season,” said Guardiola. “After winning the Community Shield against Liverpool, we dropped points maybe we didn’t expect. But I don’t know if it’s going to happen. I think every season the opponents get stronger. Liverpool will remain the strong team they are, we are seeing how Chelsea are investing in this transfer market,” added Guardiola.

Liverpool are two wins away from clinching their first league title in as many as 30 years.

Speaking about Man Utd and other teams who he expects to dominate in the league in the next campaign, Guardiola said, "We saw in the last period how Man United made a step forward. Tottenham are going to recover a lot of injured players, with Son, Harry Kane, and other players, and with an experienced manager like [Jose] Mourinho they are always going to be strong. Arsenal with more time with Mikel [Arteta] is going to happen - and Leicester you know.”

Man City were the first English side in almost 10 years to defend their Premier League title when they triumphed in the 2018-19 season and Guardiola thinks competition will only get tough in the coming months.

“Every season the teams are stronger and stronger and it will be more difficult. When we retained the title we were the first for ten years so you know how difficult it is to do that but at the same time it’s next season and I’m not thinking too much about this,” the Spaniard further added in the interview, as reported by Manchester Evening News.
