Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes has opened about Cristiano Ronaldo’s addition to the team.
Ronaldo made his highly-anticipated second debut for Manchester United Saturday against Newcastle. As expected, the Portuguese striker delivered, completing a sensational brace as the Red Devils sailed to a 4-1 win. But though all eyes were on Ronaldo, it was his compatriot Fernandes who netted the goal of the game.
Despite cynics claiming the pair’s team-up will not work, Fernandes insisted that Ronaldo's addition to the squad was more than welcome.
"Everyone knows what Cristiano Ronaldo brought for the club and we are really happy to have him," Fernandes told Sky Sports after the match.
"The most important, as [Ronaldo] will say, is the result for the team,” he continued. “Good players can always play well together."
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also noted the “good” chemistry between Fernandes and Ronaldo. However, he admitted that it is “too early” to comment on how things will play out for the team.
"Good players can always play together,” Solskjaer said of Fernandes-Ronaldo's team-up. “They have a mutual respect and play for Portugal together.”
"It’s too early for me to predict where we’ll end up,” he pointed out. “We have to be consistent and let’s see where we are."
As for Ronaldo, the 36-year-old seems to be enjoying his second stint with Manchester United.
Brimming with confidence, Ronaldo assured his new teammates and the club’s loyal supporters that Manchester United will be in for a remarkable season with him on board.
“My return to Old Trafford was just a brief reminder of why this stadium is known as the Theater of Dreams,” Ronaldo wrote on Instagram. “For me, it has always been a magical place where you can achieve everything you set your mind to.”
“Along with all my teammates and with the amazing support that we always get from the stands, we face the road ahead with confidence and optimism that we’ll all be celebrating together in the end,” he added. “Proud to be back at Man. United and playing in the Premier League once again, but above all, happy to help the team!”
Manchester United is set to take on Young Boys in Matchday 1 of the UEFA Champions League. It is yet to be determined if Solskjaer will hand Ronaldo his first Champions League match with his new team during that game.
