Manchester United's Greenwood Equals Rooney's Premier League Record [Watch]
KEY POINTS
- Mason Greenwood scored a brace against Burnley on Sunday
- He now has scored 15 league goals since his debut in 2018
- Man Utd are eight points behind City in the league table
Mason Greenwood has equaled a Premier League record held by Wayne Rooney for Manchester United.
Greenwood, who scored a brace in Manchester United's 3-1 win over Burnley on Sunday, has netted 15 Premier League goals since his first-team debut in 2018. The 19-year-old is now the joint-top scoring teenager in Premier League history for Manchester United, along with former Red Devils captain Rooney, according to Opta Joe.
Since the start of last season, no teenager has scored more top-flight goals within the top five European leagues than Manchester United's Greenwood and Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho, who scored 14 goals each.
Speaking about the milestone in an interview with Manchester United's website, Greenwood said, "Not bad company to be in, but I want to overtake him, hopefully. I knew my goals would come as I said in past interviews," he continued. "I kept my mentality and I knew chances would come and I just have to keep focused and be ready on the pitch when the chances come."
After making just four appearances in his maiden season with the Old Trafford side, Greenwood has become a regular member of the Red Devils since the 2019-20 campaign. He scored 17 goals in 49 competitive games last season and in the ongoing term, he scored nine goals in 44 matches across all competitions.
Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed the young forward in a post-match interview at Old Trafford.
"He's a good goalscorer, we know that. I thought the goal he scored against Tottenham shows that he's worked on his game because he can go inside or outside and score, so he went outside. Today he goes inside and scores. It must be a nightmare to defend against because he can go in or out, and go to his left or right. I'm so happy for him because he has put down a shift on the training ground," Solskjaer told club media in an interview.
With the win over Burnley on Sunday, Manchester United are just eight points behind leaders Manchester City in the 2020-21 Premier League.
"At least they (Man City) can't lift the trophy already. We just have to keep on winning our games and see what they do," added Solskjaer in the same interview.
Manchester United will face Leeds United in their next league fixture on Sunday.
