'The Mandalorian' Promo Art Confirms Identity Of New Assassin Droid
A new assassin droid will be introduced in “The Mandalorian.” After showrunner Jon Favreau teased a picture of the new character online, the recently released merchandise of the upcoming TV series confirms the name of the character.
According to shirt designs of “The Mandalorian” that have been released on Amazon, the name of the new assassin droid is IG-11, Making Star Wars reported. Fans of the franchise will recognize the design of the droid to be very similar to the one seen in the original “Star Wars” trilogy, but that droid was IG-88.
When Darth Vader assembled the best bounty hunters from across the galaxy, IG-88 was one of them. The character only had a cameo appearance because the bounty hunter Boba Fett (Jeremy Bulloch) took the prize that the Empire wanted in that film.
Unlike IG-88, the new assassin droid appears to have a more substantial role in the TV series. Last Christmas, Favreau shared a picture of the character on Instagram, revealing a scene that was filmed using a green screen.
Favreau also teased a still from “The Mandalorian” in a behind-the-scenes picture that showed the recording of the dialogues in the studio. That scene also involved the IG-11, which means that the character will play a major role on the show.
It isn’t clear if IG-11 is also be a bounty hunter like the IG-88, but the TV series appears to be focused on exploring the world of bounty hunters because the lead character played by Pedro Pascal has been described as a lone gunfighter operating in the outer reaches of the galaxy, where the New Republic has little to no authority.
In a previous interview with Collider, the Boba Fett actor Daniel Logan said that while the TV series may not show the popular bounty hunter from the original trilogy, it will explore the lifestyle and culture of this warrior people. He teased that the fans will understand things like why people from this planet dress in that typical armor.
