Manny Pacquiao Hinders Tyson Fury From Making The Ring Magazine's Pound-For-Pound List
KEY POINTS
- The Ring Magazine is not dropping Manny Pacquiao from top 10 pound-for-pound list
- Tyson Fury is hindered by Pacquiao from making the said list
- Both Pacquiao and Fury are future Hall of Famers
Manny Pacquiao is said to be the reason why new WBC heavyweight champ Tyson Fury is still not in The Ring Magazine’s top pound-for-pound lists.
When Fury dismantled his heavyweight nemesis Deontay Wilder via stoppage in the 7th round last Feb. 22, the world was ultimately convinced that “The Gypsy King” is one of the greatest fighters of all time. In fact, Transnational Boxing Ratings Board, Boxrec, World Boxing Network and ESPN have already included Fury in their elite pound for pound lists. However, The Ring Magazine seems to need a little more time. And apparently, it is because of the Filipino legend Pacquiao.
According to a report from NowBoxing.com, most Ring staff members are not ready to drop Pacquiao, who sits at the tenth and last spot in their top 10 best pound for pound fighters out of the list.
Ring Magazine editor in chief Douglass Fischer tried to address the issue and said that Pacquiao is now all but washed. In his most recent Mailbag column, a fan who was asking why Fury is still not in and Pacquiao is, Fischer expressed his disappointment about the issue and stated that he doesn’t know why Fury isn’t in the list yet when he is clearly “the man” in boxing right now.
“I think Fury is worthy of a top 10 pound for pound ranking right now, but I dont know why he or anyone else would give a damn about the mythical rankings when he is 'THE MAN' in boxing,” Fischer wrote.
Just like in any other sport, rankings have always been plagued with controversies. However, it will all boil down to what the fans say.
With regards to Fury and Pacquiao’s case, both boxers are surely future Hall of Famers already.
Fury introduced himself to the world after dethroning Wladimir Klitschko in 2015. Since then, Fury became an ultra popular name in the sport and evidently, his charisma and unique personality contributed to it. He then rivaled with Wilder and despite not being able to defeat the “Bronze Bomber” in the first meeting, Fury settled the issue last Feb. 22.
Pacquiao, on the other hand, has been in the game for quite a long time. The Filipino legend started making a name for himself by knocking out Mexican greats fight after fight. “Pac-Man” burst into the limelight when he ended the reign of two of the greatest Mexican fighters of all time Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales. Pacquiao never slowed down since then and worked his way up to become an eight-division title holder, beating notable world champions like Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and Antonio Margarito in the process.
