Manny Pacquiao News: Next Fight Scheduled for Nov. 10, Mayweather Jr., Marquez, Bradley and Cotto Among Potential Opponents
Manny Pacquiao met with promoter Bob Arum in Los Angeles on Monday to discuss his next fight, before the Filipino fighter and his wife left for a vacation in Israel.
While no decision has been made about exactly who Pacquiao will face next, it has been decided that the fight will take place on November 10.
A likely opponent is WBO Welterweight Champion Timothy Bradley, who took the belt from Pacquiao in a controversial split decision on June 9. But Pacquaio has a rematch clause in his contract from the Bradley fight and can challenge him whenever he wants, however could also fight Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto or the mythical bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Arum told reporters that Pacquiao has made it clear that his preference is to fight Mayweather, but that he has no strong feelings about the other three.
Yahoo Sports has reported that there is a 99 percent certainty that Pacquiao with fight a rematch with Bradley, but Arum disputed the notion that Pacquiao has made up his mind.
He kept a true poker face, Arum said of Pacquiao. I explained to him everything that is going on and what we thought, but he didn't give anything away. He just listened and took it all in.
The Mayweather fight is not likely to happen as Mayweather is in jail after pleading guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence. He is scheduled to be released on August 3, and the rigors of prison may keep him from being ready for a fight as soon as November.
Among the other three, Marquez gave Pacquiao the best fight in terms of Pay-Per-View numbers. Their bout last year sold 1.3 million pay-per-views compared to just 900,000 for Pacquiao-Bradley. However, that was before the controversy surrounding Pacquiao-Bradley. It seems plausible that the hype would bump that number up much closer to the Marquez figure.
A fight against Cotto would likely do well sales wise, but probably isn't the draw that Marquez or Bradley would be. When Cotto met Pacquiao in 2009, the WBO Welterweight belt was on the line, which would not be the case this time.
Pacquiao and Arum will finalize the opponent for the fight sometime this summer after Pacquiao returns from his vacation.
