Manny Pacquiao Next Fight: Mayweather-Guerrero Bout Could Determine If Pac-Man Faces Welterweight Champ
Manny Pacquiao has yet to schedule his next fight after getting knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in December.
The boxer was looking for a rematch with either Marquez, or Timothy Bradley, but the two will now be facing each other in September. Promoter Bob Arum recently stated that Mike Alvaradi and Brandon Rios are the top two contenders to get a shot at Pac-Man.
Pacquiao’s future, though, could be affected by the results of Saturday’s match between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Robert Guerrero. The two boxers are set to fight in Las Vegas for the WBC Welterweight title.
The possibility of a potential fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather seems to have been greatly lessened because of Pac-Man’s back-to-back losses. Besides the issue of drug testing and Pay-Per-View revenue sharing, Mayweather would consider passing on a bout because of Pacquiao’s losing streak.
“First, Manny Pacquiao has to get past Marquez, a fighter I beat with ease. I mean, that was one of my easiest fights,” Mayweather told ESPN a few months ago. “Manny Pacquiao still has Tim Bradley problems, he still has Marquez problems. First Manny Pacquiao has to get those guys, then he can step inside the lion’s den with Floyd Mayweather.”
If Mayweather were to lose on Saturday, however, that could make the possibility of him and Pacquiao stepping in the same ring more likely. Mayweather would no longer be undefeated and able to use his record as an excuse for avoiding the fight.
Mayweather may not want to face Pacquiao, at the moment, but Pac-Man still wants to be a part of one of the biggest bouts of all time.
"We're open to that fight, we've always wanted that fight," Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz told iFilm London. "Now it's in Floyd's court because Manny himself said on our last press tour when we fought Bradley that he's willing to accept less.”
Guerrero isn’t expected to pull off the upset. Mayweather is a -700 favorite, according to the online betting website Bovada.
