March Madness 2016: Betting Odds For College Basketball's NCAA Tournament, Conference Championships
March Madness 2016 is underway with the start of conference tournaments in the days leading up to Selection Sunday. Several mid-majors have already punched their ticket to the Big Dance, and teams from the Power Five conferences are looking to secure a bid or gain some momentum heading into the NCAA Tournament.
The top teams from the major conferences are all guaranteed to make the field of 68, and they can earn a No.1 seed by winning a championship this week. Virginia, Michigan State, Kansas, Arizona, Villanova and Kentucky are all favored to get automatic bids.
Kansas and Michigan State are not only the top two teams in the AP Top 25 Poll, but they have the best odds to win the national championship. They have a good chance to earn a No.1 seed even if they get upset in their respective conference tournaments.
Kentucky is ranked No.16 in the country, but they are in a strong position to win the SEC Tournament. They are among the most talented teams in the country, and they play in the weakest of the major conferences.
The defending champion Duke Blue Devils could have a difficult time winning the ACC Championship. They finished the regular season as the No.5 seed in their conference, so they’d need four straight victories in order to win the title. Duke beat Wisconsin in last year’s national championship game, and the Badgers are projected to be a No.6 seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
Villanova and Xavier have the best championship odds of any team that doesn’t play in a Power Five conference. With a 27-4 overall record, Villanova is ranked third in the AP Top 25 Poll, while Xavier is fifth with just four losses of their own. The Wildcats are favored over the Musketeers to win the Big East Tournament, though Xavier did win their most recent head-to-head meeting.
