Mason Greenwood broke a record held by Marcus Rashford during Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Young Boys in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday.
With Manchester United already qualified for the Round of 16, Ralf Rangnick fielded a second-string team with Greenwood selected as the center-forward ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford – both were rested for the fixture against the Swiss club.
Taking full advantage of the opportunity, Greenwood wasted little time as he collected a low cross from Luke Shaw and opened the scoring of the match with a scissor kick just nine minutes after the whistle. The goal saw the 20-year-old surpass Rashford in a club record in the European competition.
While it was Greenwood's first Champions League goal in the 2021-22 campaign, overall, the Englishman now has eight European goals to his name, a tally no other Manchester United player has ever reached before their 21st birthday, according to Soccer Statistician Opta Joe.
In the ongoing campaign, Greenwood has netted a total of five goals and two assists in as many as 16 appearances, across all competitions, for the Red Devils.
Manchester United boss Rangnick heaped praise on Greenwood after the game at Old Trafford, calling the two-footed forward is a "massive talent."
"He also showed, not only with the beautiful goal, but also the way that he set up the opportunity for Juan Mata. That was brilliant. He is a massive talent. Right foot, left foot, good on the ball, also the way he set up the goal for Fred on Sunday. But still, it is about continuity. He has to develop physically, but technically for his age he is a great player, and my job is to develop him and make an athlete out of him and if he manages to do that, he can become a regular player for this club," Rangnick said after the 1-1 draw, according to Man Utd's official website.
Manchester United's next assignment is an away league game against Norwich on Saturday. After 15 games, the Red Devils are placed sixth in the 2021-22 Premier League table.
