Marianne Williamson Deletes Tweet Suggesting 'Power Of The Mind' Can Alter Hurricane Dorian's Path
Democratic presidential candidate and spiritual self-help guru Marianne Williamson, in a now-deleted tweet, suggested Wednesday that prayer, meditation and visualization could cause Hurricane Dorian to "turn away from land."
Hurricane Dorian is currently a Category 2 hurricane off Florida's east coast but is heading northwards. The storm could cause major damage in North and South Carolina, with evacuation zones in the two states. The hurricane has already caused destruction in the Bahamas.
In response to a reporter sharing the tweet, she said that she is neither "crazy, irresponsible or dangerous." She has also condemned the "secularized left" for the negative response to the tweet.
Williamson is a longshot for the presidency who has received only 1% of the vote in most polls. She has not garnered enough support to appear in the Democratic primary debate in September.
Williamson has a cult following on American social news aggregation site Reddit, where her followers call themselves "orb gang," an allusion to Williamson's penchant for mysticism and a reference to "Yang gang," a slang term for supporters of presidential candidate Andrew Yang.
Williamson has also made controversial comments regarding healthcare. She has said that obligatory vaccines for children are "draconian" and "Orwellian" concepts and said it is similar to the abortion debate.
Williamson has also said that antidepressants are overprescribed in the United States for "normal human despair" and that they could play a role in mass shootings, such as the Las Vegas shooting in 2017, which killed 59 people.
Williamson previously ran an unsuccessful campaign as an independent for the 33rd district of California in 2014.
She has written 13 books on spirituality and politics and heads multiple nonprofit organizations, such as local peacebuilding organization The Peace Alliance. She is also a friend of talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
