Marie Osmond Rushed to Hospital for Bronchitis After Las Vegas Show
Singer Marie Osmond was rushed to a Las Vegas hospital because of bronchitis Wednesday night.
The 52-year-old singer singer, actress and doll designer had a scare when her voice started to give out during a section of her variety show in which she performs with her brother, Donny Osmond.
Osmond spokesman Greg Sperry said Thursday morning that during the latter stages of the duo's variety show at the Flamingo Las Vegas, Osmond's voice sounded hoarse, leading to concerns about her vocal cords. She finished the performance, and Sperry advised that she immediately seek evaluation. The vocal and respiratory concerns landed her in the emergency room soon after the show was finished.
After the show, Osmond also complained of tightness in her lungs, leading to concerns that she might be suffering from bronchitis. But after a 90-minute evaluation at St. Rose Dominican Hospital Sienna Campus Emergency Room, where she underwent a series of tests and X-rays, she was cleared to perform again Thursday evening. No dates for Donny & Marie at the Flamingo have been canceled. However, Sperry said some numbers might be cut or truncated to give her voice some rest.
Compared with Kiss lead singer Paul Stanley's throat case, Osmond's seems minor. Stanley had to undergo surgery for recurring vocal cord issues Tuesday that he said on Wednesday come with 40 years of preaching rock 'n' roll.
Besides being cleared to perform, Osmond is also cleared to participate in a doll-signing Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Flamingo Promenade gift store. That event is to mark the 20th anniversary of her signature doll collection, and is expected to draw hundreds of fans from across the country.
Osmond, who suffers from allergies, tweeted that she didn't recognize her illness until she began her high notes during her performance: So the allergies went into a bronchitis. Didn't realize it until I went to hit the high notes last night on stage. Pie Jesu was kinda P-U.
Thursday evening, she was determined to perform, tweeting:
Getting ready to go to the show. Big doll event tonight. Nothing could make me miss this. ;)
Osmond has been through much worse recently.
On Feb. 26, 2010, Osmond's son, Michael, committed suicide by jumping from the eighth floor of his apartment building in Los Angeles after battling depression for most of his life. The autopsy released on April 21, 2010, revealed that no drugs were found in his system.
However, on the positive side, Osmond remarried her first husband, Steve Craig, this May 4 in a surprise ceremony at the Las Vegas Mormon Temple.
